Thursday Ratings: ABC Remains Strong Against CBS

ABC’s crossover experiment paid off big time yesterday. Despite an all-new lineup on CBS (and the season premiere of Survivor), the Alphabet network finished the night with a win in the demos. CBS, though, did place first with the viewers.
8pm
- Survivor: Tocantins (4.4/13 in 18-49) kicked things off with 13.8 million.
- Ugly Betty (7.4 million, 2.3/6) did about the same.
- My Name is Earl (6.3 million, 2.6/8) was up a smidge; Kath & Kim (5.5 million, 2.4/6) picked up 800,000.
- FOX‘s coverage of the 40th NAACP Image Awards (1.4/4) drew in 4.2 million.
- Smallville* (2.4 million, 0.9/3) was off by 1.5 million.

Last night, ABC wasted a Grey’s/Private Practice crossover special on a competition-free evening. CBS’ repeat-filled slate allowed the Alphabet network to win in the both the viewers and the demos.

- Bones (10.8 million, 3.2/9 in 18-49) was tops in its hour.
- Ugly Betty (7.3 million, 2.3/7) was up 3.3 million from last week.
- The Big Bang Theory* (2.0/6) and My Name is Earl* (2.5/7) both pulled in 6.2 million.
- How I Met Your Mother* (5.9 million, 2.0/5) and Kath & Kim (4.7 million, 2.0/5) tied in the demos.
- Smallville (3.9 million, 1.6/4) lost 300,000.

- Criminal Minds* (2.0/5) checked in 9 million.
- My Name is Earl* (4.8 million, 1.8/5) was off by 1.7 million.
- Smallville (4.2 million, 1.7/5) added on 400,000.
- Ugly Betty* (4 million, 1.3/4) plunged by 3.5 million.
- Kath & Kim* (3.2 million, 1.4/4) gave up 1.7 million.

William Petersen’s departure from CSI brought the show’s numbers back to Earth. As a result, the Alphabet network had the best demos of the evening. Unfortunately, ABC’s lucky streak probably won’t last long. We’re now just weeks away from the premiere of Survivor: Tocantins.

- Approximately 10 million (2.9/8 in 18-49) welcomed Bones to its new Thursday time slot.
- NCIS* (2.2/6) pulled in 8.6 million.
- Ugly Betty (2.4/7) turned in 7.5 million.
- My Name is Earl (6.5 million, 2.6/8) was down 600,000; Kath & Kim (2.2/6) registered 4.9 million.
- Smallville (3.8 million, 1.6/4) was off 500,000.

Thursday Ratings: Big Sendoff for CSI’s Grissom

After weeks of buildup, William Petersen finally made his grand exit last night. The farewell episode attracted CSI’s largest audience since 2007’s premiere and gave CBS an easy double win.

- An early CSI* (3.1/8 in 18-49) got 13.7 million warmed up.
- A My Name is Earl block (one original, one repeat) averaged 6.6 million (2.4/6).
- Back-to-back Scrubs* episodes averaged in 5.7 million (1.8/5).
- Kitchen Nightmares* (1.6/4) dished up 4.1 million.
- Smallville (4.3 million, 1.8/5) had its best audience since November.

College football season ended yesterday with a bang. The BCS game on FOX easily gave the network a double win last night. Meanwhile, Private Practice‘s official Thursday debut did well for ABC. The medical drama even bested that other medical drama on NBC.

- Approximately 26.8 million watched Florida beat Oklahoma in FOX‘s BCS game.
- CSI: NY* (2.0/5 in 18-49) nailed down 8.5 million.
- Ugly Betty (7.5 million, 2.4/6) was down 900,000 from its last new episode.
- My Name is Earl (5.5 million, 2.0/6) was off by 17%; Kath & Kim (4.2 million, 1.7/4) lost 22%.
- Smallville (0.9/2) turned in 2.3 million.

- Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm): “Blair tries to get accepted into a distinguished ladies club and Jenny returns to school.” Just to clarify - Blair is hoping join a ladies club, not the gentlemen’s kind.
- The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm): Series return. “After Amy hears that she needs to find a job, she and Ben decide to get married.” Unfortunately, she later realizes that she still needs to find a job.
- True Beauty (ABC, 10pm): Series premiere. “Beginning an eight-episode elimination contest in which 10 gorgeous people face challenges to determine the most beautiful—and inner beauty counts as much as physical attractiveness—while they live together in an LA mansion.” Welcome to the future of the Miss America pageant.

MONDAY 12/29)- Seven Deadly Sins (History, 9pm): “The sin of lust is examined in the opener of a seven-part series exploring the seven capital vices, including their origin in religious teaching and history’s worst perpetrators.” In case you needed some help thinking of a good resolution.
- Bromance (MTV, 9pm): Series premiere. “Brody Jenner is introduced to nine guys who will be competing to be part of his entourage.” Finding someone less annoying than Spencer Pratt shouldn’t be too hard.
- The City (MTV, 10pm):: Series premiere. “Whitney Port arrives in New York City and begins working for iconic fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.” And by “working,” we mean she’ll be giving Diane free publicity.
- 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs (VH1, 10pm): “A five-part countdown of the Top 100 hard rock songs begins.” On VH1, Daughtry is considered hard rock.

- Ugly Betty (4.6 million, 1.3/4) was down 800,000.

- Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa (7.4 million, 2.4/7) had the hour’s best demos.
- Secret Millionaire (6.7 million, 2.2/7) gave up a 1/2 million.
- The possible last episode of Pushing Daisies (4.8 million, 1.6/5) pushed away 200,000.
